Community Food Programs

After School Cooking
After School Cooking is a fun, free cooking program that teaches vital healthy life skills to kids without them really noticing, they just love to cook! The menu reflects the tastes and cultures of the children who love to suggest favourites from home. It can get pretty chaotic but somehow a wonderful meal always emerges on the table!

Meet and Eat

Meet and Eat is a weekly community lunch program run in partnership with Cohealth and Fitzroy Learning Network. The lunch is free and open to anyone who wants to join in. Participants can come and help prepare the meal or just come along to share the lunch and a chat. The group discusses local initiatives, services and issues, as well as providing an opportunity to practise English language skills.

High Rise Baking Group

Baking Group meets regularly at the Fitzroy Community Food Centre Oven in the name of sourdough, fire and community. The group is for anyone interested in making or eating bread. Locals gather to share diverse bread making methods and discover the secrets of sourdough. The loaves made are then sold at The Community Grocer Fitzroy.

Food Swaps

Food Swaps are all about meeting other local food growers, sharing information, and sharing your surplus while getting to know your neighbours.Cultivating Community together with 3000acres organise Fitzroy’s Urban Harvest monthly food swap.

Why food programs?

Our Food Relief Survey (2020) conducted at our COVID-19 Fresh Food Parcel Program told us that

63.7% of respondents worried about how they would pay for groceries

and 31% had run out of food and could not afford to buy anymore.

In Australia, more than one in five children (22%) live in a food-insecure household.

People living in public housing are at a 48.4% greater risk of experiencing food insecurity compared to the general population.

Residents who speak a language other than English were also more likely to be food insecure compared to residents who spoke only English (41.8% vs 22.3%)

Community-capacity building food programs improve access to fresh, healthy and culturally appropriate food and are a vital part of the solution to fighting food insecurity, poverty and hunger.

Over the past 20 years, we’ve seen how cooking (at all ages) brings the joy of creation, a sense of confidence allowing connection with others, pride in developing human potential, and a greater ability to manage budgets, eat better and improve wellbeing.
